Kansas health insurance plans

How individual and family health coverage works in Kansas, in plain language.

Where Kansas residents shop

Kansas residents who buy their own coverage shop on HealthCare.gov (federal Marketplace) at www.healthcare.gov/kansas/. That is also where income-based help with monthly premiums (premium tax credits) is applied. Enrollment follows the federal HealthCare.gov calendar.

Kansas remains one of just ten states that hasn't adopted ACA Medicaid expansion as of 2026, despite recent legislative pushes -- this creates a real coverage gap for low-income adults without dependent children, who generally don't qualify for KanCare at any income level and may need to look at marketplace or other options instead.

Enrolling

Open enrollment dates are set by the marketplace and can change from year to year, so confirm this year’s window on the marketplace site before you plan around it. Outside open enrollment you generally need a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, moving, or a change in household size.

What affects the plans you see

  • Where you live. Plans and premiums are set by area within Kansas, so your county matters. Find your county.
  • Income and household size. These determine help with premiums and whether you may qualify for Medicaid instead.
  • Plan level. Metal levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) trade a lower monthly premium against higher costs when you use care.

KanCare, run by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), is reachable at 1-800-792-4884 -- that's the right place to start if your Kansas Medicaid eligibility changed. Since Kansas hasn't expanded Medicaid, a non-disabled adult without dependent children generally has no KanCare pathway regardless of income.

Kansas does not run its own ACA exchange, so Kansas marketplace shopping and subsidy questions go through the federal HealthCare.gov Marketplace, which is also where someone who falls in Kansas's coverage gap should check for marketplace subsidy eligibility.

Free Medicare counseling is available in Kansas through SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) at 1-800-860-5260, separate from Kansas Health Insurance's own free phone help.

Short-term

Need coverage in between?

Short-term plans can start quickly and help with big unexpected medical bills. They are not ACA plans: they can ask health questions, may not cover pre-existing conditions, and what is offered varies by state.
